How An Electronic Resume Can Improve Your Job Search
by Rose Smith, Copyright 2004
Electronic resumes are designed to be used for posting online or to send by email via a computer for fast contact with a potential employer. Electronic resumes, or e-resumes as most are called, have become a popular avenue for job hunting. Instead of waiting days for a mailed resume to arrive at an employer's place of business, you can now send your resume to a targeted job posting within minutes. However, there is a difference between formatting a "normal" resume and an electronic resume.
With a typical resume you can format your layout, add special fonts, highlight headings with bolding and italics, and so on. Perfect for mailing or faxing, but not good for sending by email or posting online.
"Why is that?" you may be asking.
Well for one thing, resume databanks need your resume to be formatted in ASCII text…basically a very plain version saved as a .txt file that can easily be copied & pasted, plus scanned if need be. Also, many people believe that if they attach their resume to an email that should be sufficient. Wrong! You cannot possibly know what word processing software the targeted company is using. They may not be able to open and read your attachment. Also, with the proliferation of Internet viruses, you may inadvertently have a virus hitching a ride with your resume…and it gets sent to the trash bin before it ever reaches the employer, but you may never know that.
Your e-resume also needs to include relevant keywords that use the terminology of the job market you're searching in. Keywords are important because that's how resume databanks are set up. An employer types in keywords looking for the perfect match to the job position. It's important then, that you make a list of relevant keywords in your target industry to match your skills and knowledge.
There are 3 ways to post your electronic resume online.
1. You can send your electronic resume to an individual employer. Some require that you email them, in which case you usually just copy and paste your plain text resume right into the body of the email. Sometimes, they will specifically ask for the resume to be sent as an attachment…in which case you can attach your regular resume. Just make sure it's been typed and formatted for the word processing program that they indicate and scan it for possible viruses before you send it). Other companies require that you fill out an online application form. Just copy and paste where needed from your ASCII text eresume to the form.
2. You can enter your resume details into a public resume database where employers can search for specific keywords and where you can also search for jobs. Remember to use the plain text format for these postings.
3. The third is called a Web Resume, where you set up a web page with your eresume. This requires knowledge of HTML and a good eye for formatting web pages so that it looks good. Within the resume you will have hyperlinks to each subheading, as well as links to other pages, such as a reference page. You should also have a link to a page that contains a plain text resume that can easily be printed or scanned. The good thing about setting up a Web Resume is that you can easily give out our web address if, let's say, you were casually talking to someone about looking for work, but obviously don't have a resume on you at that moment. This is just one of the uses of a web resume.
The above information should hopefully give you some insights on how an electronic resume can improve your job searches. Visit the sponsers to the left for more information on eresumes.
