Resume Objective Statements - What's Their Purpose?
by Rose Smith, Copyright 2004
The purpose of your resume objective statement is provide a very brief statement that makes you look like the ideal employee so the employer will want to read your resume further.
Resume objective statements are included at the beginning of your resume. You'll also see it called by many other names, such as: job objective, career profile, career summary, job profile, etc. A resume objective statement basically gives a short description of the type of job position you are looking for and a brief description of why you are qualified for that position.
Before writing out your job objective, you need to determine exactly what you want. What type of job position are you looking for? What are your qualifications to do that job? Then incorporate those objectives to match the job's employment description.
Keep your job profile short, no more than a couple of lines. Your job objective statement should make you look like a potential employee who can make a good contribution to the company. In other words, focus on the needs of the company, not on your own needs.
Here is an example of a job objective that focuses on your own needs:
"Seeking a rewarding position in the computer technology industry that will allow for rapid advancement."
Here is the rewritten version that focuses on the needs of the company:
"Seeking a position in the computer technology industry where I can utilize my extensive computer knowledge and experience to troubleshoot hardware, networking and software issues."
Remember, keep your resume objective statement short, to the point, and focused on the needs of the company, while highlighting one or two qualifications that you posses for that particular position. Give the employer what he/she wants to hear and you'll be on your way to writing an effective resume.
