The Importance of Writing a Powerful Cover Letter

by Rose Smith, Copyright 2004

Learning how to write a powerful resume cover letter can help you land the interview. The resume cover letter is the very first thing the employer reads. If it makes a strong impression and stands out from the sea of hundreds of other applicants, then he/she will go on to scan over your resume and make the decision of whether to call you in for an interview. All in the span of 10 to 15 seconds.

As you can see, learning how to write a cover letter that gets results is a very important part of your overall job search. Having a resume writing service do this for you along with preparing your resume is your best bet in landing a great job. However, if you want to try it on your own first, make sure you study various examples on how to accomplish this delicate task.

When writing a cover letter, keep these general rules in mind:

1. It must be aesthetically pleasing and consistent in design. Keep your margins 1" wide. Use the same font throughout. Bold your headings. Leave spaces between paragraphs. Use plain white, good quality paper and a good quality printer if you are sending your cover and resume by "snail mail". (It's always good to have a few copies on hand just in case - not everyone wants to receive cover letters/resumes by email).

2. Personalize your cover letter by addressing the hiring person's name in the salutation. If you don't know the name, try doing an Internet search on the company or call the company and find out who it is. Do your best to avoid using "Dear Sir or Madam" or "To Whom It May Concern", if possible.

3. You need to capture the reader's attention in the first paragraph. Include a reference to the position you're applying for. The reason for this is that they may have different positions open that you don't know about. Give a clear, strong statement as to why you're applying for the job and what you can do for the company.

4. Bring attention to your past accomplishments by emphasizing how they will help in the targeted job position. Use bulleted paragraphs for this. It breaks up the page and draws the reader's eye to what is the most important part of the cover letter.

5. Close your letter by stating that you will contact the hiring manager by phone within a few days. Then do it! By taking the initiative, instead of waiting for the employer to call you, you could put yourself a step ahead of other candidates.
